What is Web Hosting and How Does Web Hosting Work?

Web Hosting

Website hosting plays a crucial role in creating a website, as it is responsible for keeping it online on the internet. It can be a small or large website, website hosting is essential to ensure access via the internet with quality, security, and reliability.

What is Website Hosting?

Website hosting is a service that stores and makes available a website, application, or page on the internet.

A website or web system is a set of files that can be accessed by other people through a browser connected to the internet. For these files to be accessible, they need to be hosted on a web server, which is a computer connected to the internet and configured to receive visitors.

In other words, hosting is the server where the files and pages of a website are stored. Thus, as if it were a house, a hosting has an address, called a domain.

The domain is the name of the website that is typed by the user on his computer. It is he who has the function of identifying the site and finding the server where it is hosted.

Specialized companies do the best website hosting. They have their own or rented servers, machines with hardware, and software specially configured for the web.

These servers are located in physical structures known as “data centers”, which are just large sets of hosting servers.

How Does Website Hosting Work?

The word “site” means “place” in English. We can say that it is the place where the files of our blog, virtual store, or business page are located. In order for it to be accessible, these files must be hosted on a web server.

Thus, hosting is marketed as a product or service by companies in the segment. The amount is usually charged in monthly, quarterly, or even annual installments. Let's see how hosting works and what it takes to have one.

Domain

First, to have hosting is to register a domain. It must be a name that is not already in use by another application and needs to be registered by the competent authority.

The best hosting companies have a domain registration service. The company itself registers the domain at the registrar for the customer. Some even give you the first year of the domain for free.

This is an easy way to register the domain and keep it linked directly with the provider hosting your website. However, it is possible to register directly with the responsible body and then hire any hosting company.

There are some domains that can be registered for free. This is possible thanks to some partner countries, which have offered their domain name extension to be used free of charge. Some examples of free domains are .tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, and .gq.

Website Files

The website pages are saved on the web server and are interpreted by the user's browser. Through them, you configure the appearance of your application and interact with the user. The main files of a website are images, code pages, and databases.

The pages of a website are encoded by programming or markup languages. These are code files whose function is to display information to the user, capture data provided by the customer, and provide interaction responses. A website is mostly written using the following technologies:

 HTML: markup language that positions elements on a web page and is interpreted by the browser;

  CSS: technology that defines color styles, fonts, and effects and that aims to make the interface more beautiful and user-friendly;

● PHP and JavaScript: programming languages that have the function of making pages dynamic. They are codes that take actions according to the data entered by the user.

A website's files are uploaded to the server over the internet, using technologies such as FTP and SSH. These files are saved on the hosting in folders equal to those on your computer, and are opened when someone accesses your domain.

Server

As we have seen, the server is the computer set up to host the website. It has hardware (memory, HD, processor) and software (operating system, database system, Apache Server).

The server has an IP address used for the hosting to be located through the domain address. In this way, the domain name is linked to this server, which makes it possible for it to be found when accessed by a browser.
